Our Legislative Goals

  • Align our education system to the needs of Oklahoma's current and future workforce
  • Encourage increased connection between business and the classroom
  • Protect access to quality college and career readiness assessments
  • Attract, retain and promote outstanding teachers and administrators in schools
  • Place an emphasis on giving students the foundation they need for academic success
  • Protect and improve the variety of educational choices given to Oklahoma students and parents
  • Protect existing reforms and support their full implementation
  • Promote innovation in education

2019 Legislative Agenda

  • Protect accountability systems, like A-F school site report cards and the Reading Sufficiency Act, to ensure schools have strong metrics by which to measure growth and improvement
  • Reform Oklahoma’s school funding formula so it is more transparent, student-centered and, as much as possible, allows funding to follow a student
  • Expand access to programs that expedite credential attainment, college credit and concurrent enrollment for students statewide
  • Fund advancement opportunities for teachers through the newly-created teacher licensure ladder
  • Develop and fund a mechanism to assist educators with loan forgiveness through public-private funding who agree to stay in the profession, with increased funding for teachers who teach in a high-need subject area or school
  • Support the passage of policies that promote school choice in order to give students free market choice when selecting the school that best meets their individual needs
  • Give public charter schools equal access to similar resources as traditional public schools and oppose efforts to restrict charter school expansion
  • Support additional funding to the State Department of Education’s Competitive Grant Pool to provide additional resources to schools for innovative, research-based programs

Long-Term Policy

  • Create an Innovation Fund for education to foster outside the box thinking and creative ideas
  • Create an online portal to help better connect business with education needs
  • Reform high school counselors to make them more like career navigators
  • Advocate for funding formula reform, including flexibility and equalized funding for all public schools
  • Incentivize businesses to offer internships, apprenticeships, teacher externships
  • Expand competency-based and quality digital learning offerings statewide
  • Support increased and improved STEM education at all grade levels and encourage STEM community participation statewide
  • Encourage the development of PK-20 longitudinal database to include data from common education, CareerTech, higher education and the workforce
  • Build stronger school leaders through traditional education certificates as well as non-traditional pathways
